The GiNCHY GUiDE To: Rom Coms, Part 3

Do not, under any circumstances, watch this film:

It’s so bad it will actually make you angry, which, last time I checked, is not what this kind of movie is supposed to do.  There is literally ONE funny line in the entire piece of work.  And the two Taylors (Lautner & Swift) are so appalling inept at acting that it is laughable.  So, I guess that means there are three funny things in the movie.

Instead, watch this brilliantly collaborative take on love that shows how great writing, good direction, and a cast made up not only of celebrities, but of fine actors, can achieve what every romantic comedy aims for:  a beautiful, multifaceted depiction of love.

The GiNCHY GUiDE To: Rom-Coms, Part 2

Don’t watch this movie:

Watch this movie instead:

It’s basically the same thing only WAY funnier and the leads have much more chemistry.

Don’t watch this movie:

Watch this one instead.  Twice:

Of course we love Kristin Bell, and we’re even quite fond of Amy Adams, but these two recent rom-coms are amazingly disappointing.  And hey, at least Roman Holiday actually TAKES PLACE in Rome.

You’re welcome, loyal readers.  The GUiDE is just here to help.  Please take advantage of the countless hours we have spent enduring poorly made romances and take advantage of our suggestions for time better spent.

The GiNCHY GUiDE To: Rom-Coms, Part 1

So, being a guy, I tend to take a lot of heat from other guys because I actually like romantic comedies.  I don’t want to spend a lot of time defending this position here, except to say that certainly I am aware that, like, 75% of rom-coms are bad.  I know this.  But there are still some good ones out there.  I’ve done the research.  And I’d like you, gentle reader, to be able to benefit from said research.  So, let’s just jump right into Part 1 of our on-going series…  Good Rom-Coms.  (I’ll work on that title).

This week’s suggested romantic comedy is Priceless, starring everyone’s favorite ingenue francais, Audrey Tautou, and that guy from the hit French film The Valet, which also starred Kristen Scott Thomas in that year that every French movie had Kristen Scott Thomas in it (see also the excellent Tell No One).

Anyway, Priceless has everything we’re looking for in a rom-com: a fun, light-hearted plot with love at it’s core, solid humor, romantic & scenic settings, and while I won’t say “twists” exactly, I will say it has enough turns to keep one interested while still not suspending too much disbelief.

But above all, it has really the only thing I’m looking for in this type of film:  chemistry between the leads.  Tautou and Valet guy ACTUALLY SEEM LIKE THEY COULD FALL IN LOVE.  I know, I know, it doesn’t seem like that’s asking too much, but remember…  75% = bad.

It’s not uproarious, rather it has a quiet elegance to it that feels nice.  Sure, there’s some silly stuff, but it all works nicely together.  And again, Tautou is luminescent, even through the bitchiness of her character, and you can totally see why this guy would do anything for her love.

So, yeah.  Dig it:  Priceless, good rom-com.  Check it out.
